Great thrillers: When the unexpected strikes

Great stories are often born out extraordinary things happening to ordinary people. A good thriller takes people out of their comfort zone and thrusts them into an often uncomfortable and exciting world. Here are three books which do just that.

Down the River unto the Sea by Walter Mosley

In the first of a series, centered around detective Joe King Oliver, Down the River unto the Sea starts with Oliver at a low ebb. He has just served time in prison after being framed for sexual assault but is given a new lease of life when his accuser admits to lying about the assault. Oliver begins working as a private investigator and comes up against more corruption and crime as he seeks to put things right.

Let Me Lie by Clare Mackintosh

Anna Johnson’s life is devastated when both her parents commit suicide within a short period of time. However, her suspicions are aroused when an anonymous tip off leads her to belief there was more to her parents’ deaths. Johnson’s investigations lead here to enlisting the help of a retired detective and what the uncover kicks off a compelling and gripping series of events.

The Switch by Jose

Michael Tanner doesn’t know how his life will start to spiral out of control after he accidentally picks up the wrong laptop at the airport. The one he has taken belongs to a US senator and his reasons for wanting it back so urgently begin to freak Tanner out. This fast-paced thriller will leave you breathless with excitement.
