Beware! Holiday Foods Which Are Poisonous to Pets

When the holidays roll around one of the best bits is the many delicious foods and drinks to enjoy. But while you’re cramming the goodies into your face, you might want to make sure that they’re not within reach of your pets. Many of the foods we enjoy are toxic to animals - here are some of the worst offenders.

Macadamia Nuts

A good selection of nuts makes a scrumptious snack at Christmas but when it comes to macadamia nuts, you’ll need to be careful. This innocent-looking food is toxic to dogs and can cause serious problems. Symptoms to watch out for include weakness, tremors, vomiting, stiffness and being wobbly on their feet.

Unbaked bread dough

If you’re making your own baked goodies, make sure that the uncooked dough is kept well out of reach. When eaten, it can easily expand within the stomach and cause intestinal blockage - and even death. To avoid the dough becoming fatal, emergency surgery is necessary to restore the blood supply cut off by a twisted stomach.

Caffeinated drinks

There’s nothing like a shot of caffeine to keep you going but it has a very different effect on pets. Coffee and other caffeinated drinks can cause heart abnormalities and seizures in cats, dogs and other pets. Alcohol is also toxic to pets so if you’ve got a tipple which contains both booze and caffeine make sure it’s nowhere near your four-legged friends.
