The original Candyman movie was based on a short story by Clive Barker called The Forbidden from his collection Books of Blood. The 2021 version is the fourth movie in the Candyman series, but is intended to be a direct sequel to the first film released in 1992.

The movie is written by Jordan Peele, who won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his acclaimed horror flick Get Out. It is directed by Nia DaCosta and stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and Colman Domingo.

The old Cabrini Green neighborhood where Candyman first appeared when people said his name five times in front of a mirror has now become gentrified and is now home to s Anthony McCoy and his girlfriend Briann Cartwright. However, the history of the area soon catches up with them and threatens to unleash a whole new world of horror.
