Inspiring lines from crime fiction writers

Want to read some really inspirational words from your favourite crime fiction writers? If yes, then take a read through this list curated by the Hubbfi review team.

Crime fiction, especially noir and hardboiled, is the literature of the proletariat. ~Adrian McKinty

There are a number of writers who believe it is their duty to throw as many curve balls at the reader as possible. To twist and twist again. These are the Chubby Checkers of crime fiction and, while I admire the craft, I think that it can actually work against genuine suspense. ~Mark Billingham

I had done 12 little romance books, and I decided I wanted to move into crime fiction. ~Janet Evanovich

I respond very well to rules. If there are certain parameters it’s much easier to do something really good. Especially when readers know what those are. They know what to expect and then you have to wrong-foot them. That is the trick of crime fiction. And readers come to crime and graphic novels wanting to be entertained, or disgusted. ~Denise Mina

Most crime fiction plots are not ambitious enough for me. I want something really labyrinthine with clues and puzzles that will reward careful attention.~Sophie Hannah

I’ve always been drawn to the extremes of human behavior, and crime fiction is a great way to explore the lives and stories of fascinating people. ~Nick Petrie

The best crime stories are not about how cops work on cases. It’s about how cases work on cops. ~Joseph Wambaugh

If you don’t have the time to read, you simply don’t have the tools to write.~Stephen King

Readers have to feel you know what you’re talking about. ~Margaret Murphy

Keep asking ‘Who wants something?’ ‘Why do they need it?’ and ‘What’ll happen if they don’t get it? ~Unknown

A man’s grammar, like Caesar’s wife, should not only be pure, but above suspicion of impurity. ~Edgar Allan Poe

Chapters are shorter than they used to be, and I have to be creative about ways to keep the pace moving: varying my sentence length, making sure each chapter ends on a note of suspense, keeping excess narration to a minimum. ~Joseph Finder

My ideas? Headlines. The human heart. My deepest fears. The inner voice that says: if it scares you, it’ll scare readers too. ~Meg Gardiner

Surprise is when a leader is unexpectedly shot whilst giving a speech. Suspense is when the leader is delivering a speech while an assassin waits in the audience. ~Unknown

I’d have to say that most of my ideas originate with everyday anxieties. What if I forgot to lock the door? What if a horrific crime happened next door? What if my daughter didn’t show up at work? What if I woke up one day and the house was empty? ~Linwood Barclay

Ideas are not the hard part of writing. I have ideas all the time. The challenge is understanding which ideas are the most interesting and powerful and dramatic, and then finding the best way to bring them to life. It’s all in the execution, because the idea is where the work begins, not where it ends. ~Jeff Abbott

If you don’t understand that story is character and not just idea, you will not be able to breathe life into even the most intriguing flash of inspiration. ~Elizabeth George

The character that lasts is an ordinary guy with some extraordinary qualities.~Raymond Chandler

You’re looking for your character who’s got the absolute most at stake, and that’s the person who you want your story to be about. ~Daniel Palmer

You can always edit a bad page. You can’t edit a blank page. ~Jodi Picoult

When you’re editing write the following words onto a Post-it note in big red letters and stick it on your monitor: ‘Who Cares?’. If something has no bearing on the story, leave it out. ~Stuart MacBride

If I waited for perfection, I would never write a word. ~Margaret Atwood

Great horror quotes from thrilling horrors

Make sure your doors are locked when you read through these chilling horror quotes selected by the Hubbfi review team.

“Never talk to strangers. If someone ever tries to take you, fight with everything you have. Scream as loud as you can. (He’d never told her what to do if the man was too strong and there was no one to hear her screaming.)”

—Ink and Bone, Lisa Unger

“Have you ever heard a newborn cry as it awakes from a nightmare?” the Long Walker asked. Petty was too stunned by its question to reply. “A newborn, only a few days old,” it went on. “They have nightmares, but not as you would understand. Their minds are unformed, as was your own at that age. A newborn baby can still see the world behind the world, you see? The world where my daddy lives, and me and a few others like us. They can still see us. That’s why they scream as they do.”

—Little Heaven, Nick Cutter

“How do I know you’ll keep your word?” asked Coraline.

“I swear it,” said the other mother. “I swear it on my own mother's grave.”

“Does she have a grave?” asked Coraline.

“Oh yes,” said the other mother. “I put her in there myself. And when I found her trying to crawl out, I put her back.”

—Coraline, Neil Gaiman

“But I’ll tell you something, Father; you give me Regan’s identical twin: same face, same voice, same smell, same everything down to the way she dots her i’s, and still I’d know in a second that it wasn’t really her! I’d know it! I’d know it in my gut and I’m telling you I know that thing upstairs is not my daughter! I know it! I know!”

—The Exorcist, William Peter Blatty

Key ingredients of a killer horror novel

Writing a good horror novel is about more than just giving readers a few jumps. Here are some key elements to writing a killer horror novel.

Characters

First of all, you need realistic characters so readers will identify with them. Many horror stories will involve some sort of supernatural elements, so having ordinary, down-to-earth characters will emphasize the unreal nature of their situation.

Readers need to feel some sort of emotion towards a character and have an investment in their fate, good or bad.

Fear

Sounds like a given, but a horror novel needs to scare its readers, but how do you do this? Often an over-reliance on gore and violence. Very often the most effective fear is the fear of the unknown.

There is nothing more terrifying than the feeling of helplessness. That’s why authors will often using dark or supernatural powers to engender fear in their readers. They put characters in a position of not knowing what to do or what they’re dealing with.

Storyline

Like any form of fiction, a horror novel needs to have a good story. Authors can play about a bit with reality and use fantasy and supernatural elements, but the story must have its internal logic. There are some well-worn horror storylines that imaginative authors will try to subvert and bring a fresh take on, but you must always remember, first and foremost, to tell a good story.

Nail the ending

It doesn’t have to be a happy one, but it does have to be memorable. Don’t cop out and put it all down to a bad dream by one of the main characters. A great ending will take a reader’s breath away and leave them wanting more.

A couple of fresh frights to look out for in 2021

Horror fans are in for a few treats in 2021 with the rebooting of some old favorites and fresh new scares set to hit the big screen. Here are a couple of new horror movies to look out for in 2021.

Candyman

The original Candyman movie was based on a short story by Clive Barker called The Forbidden from his collection Books of Blood. The 2021 version is the fourth movie in the Candyman series, but is intended to be a direct sequel to the first film released in 1992.

The movie is written by Jordan Peele, who won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his acclaimed horror flick Get Out. It is directed by Nia DaCosta and stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and Colman Domingo.

The old Cabrini Green neighborhood where Candyman first appeared when people said his name five times in front of a mirror has now become gentrified and is now home to s Anthony McCoy and his girlfriend Briann Cartwright. However, the history of the area soon catches up with them and threatens to unleash a whole new world of horror.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw

From the well-worn slasher franchise comes a new installment with a surprising star. Spiral not only stars Chris Rock, but the well-known comedian and comic actors was involved in coming up with the concept.

Rock plays detective Zeke Banks in a movie which is sure to guarantee the gory violence and suspense of previous Saw incarnations.

The books that scared the top horror writers

Horror writers make their living out of creating gruesome and frightening characters and scenarios, but do they ever get scared? It seems that many of them do and although a lot of famous horror writers have drawn inspiration from classic horror novels, they have also confessed to being spooked by them.

Here are a few examples:

Anne Rice

Best known as the author of Interview with the Vampire, Rice also wrote the Vampire Chronicle series of books, so is well-versed in the genre. However, she confessed to not being able to finish perhaps the most famous vampire novel of them all – Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Rice told The Guardian in 2019: “This so scared, so shocked, so horrified me, that I abandoned the book and took it back to the library. I have not, to this day, read Dracula in its entirety.”

Ruth Ware

In a Dark, Dark Wood is every bit the psychological horror-thriller the title suggests, but its author Ruth Ware isn’t immune to the frights herself. The book that most gave Ware the chills was Shirley Jackson’s classic The Haunting of Hill House. Ware says: “It has one of the best and most unsettling opening paragraphs I’ve ever read. It sets the tone for a book in which Jackson rarely gives the reader a moment’s respite – what begins with a creeping sense of unease, mounts eventually to sheer terror.”

Stephen King

You would think that the master of modern horror writing would not get scared, but he confesses to struggling to settle down at night after reading one particular book. The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters forced King to admit that “Several sleepless nights are guaranteed.” Scaring Stephen King is one huge seal of approval.
